Being within driving distance of the coast also provides for some of the most intriguing day trips which include wildlife, national history and just plain fun. These day trips are listed in no particular order, and each have their own distinct set of benefits, fun and excitement.

Alligator Alley

Located in Summerdale, AL, Alligator Alley provides adults and children the opportunity to get up close (but not too close) to hundreds of these prehistoric creatures. They offer birthday packages for kids, they’re handicapped accessible, and it’s a great place for a picnic. Other natural wildlife inhabitants include turtles, ospreys, owls, bullfrogs and many more.

Exploreum Science Center

Exploreum Science Center is located in Mobile. The Exploreum has been a field trip destination for kids for decades. The IMAX theater features films about animals and nature and is a perfect venue for family excursions. Some of their permanent exhibits feature hands-on science education and entertainment as well as exciting special events all year long.

Seward Farms

The pumpkin barn is now open at Seward Farms! Experience a challenging corn maze, pig races, funny farm golf, pony rides and more! Seward Farms is a fantastic place to have a fun family get away. Seward Farms is located in Lucedale, MS, just a short drive from Mobile. A perfect day trip!

Gulfquest National Maritime Museum

Gulfquest National Maritime Museum is located in Mobile. Their mission is to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to understand and appreciate the Gulf Coast’s rich maritime heritage through exhibits, programs and activities. Sounds like a perfect place to have an educational, fun, family day together.

Ft. Morgan Historical Site

Ft. Morgan was completed in 1834 with the intent of guarding the entrance of Mobile Bay. The fort was active in four wars and is most famous for its role in the Civil War. The fort features an active living history program that interprets all the military periods and holds an annual event commemorating the Battle of Mobile Bay. History buffs, this is your place!

Bellingrath Gardens and Home

Bellingrath Gardens and Home is one of the most beautiful places in the United States. The facility encompasses the 65 acre garden and garden estate of Walter and Bessie Bellingrath. The Fall season explodes with color, and it’s why we recommend visiting the Gardens not just in the Fall, but anytime during the year.

Dauphin Island Sea Lab Estuarium

The Alabama Aquarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (formerly named the Estuarium) is an exciting educational destination for the whole family. Along with the 10,000 square foot exhibit hall, visitors can also experience a 7,000 gallon stingray touch-pool and the Living Marsh Boardwalk. 

Monroeville, AL

Home to Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, the small town of Monroeville, AL was the inspiration for her book. Visitors can tour the courthouse and the town and still get a feel for the small town setting that was the backdrop of her book.
